I hear it's a bank holiday in UK today. Jim's been chatting on the phone to his Mum. She was telling him what a lovely day it was: 17 degrees. He was telling her how cold and chilly is was here: yup - 17 degrees.
If ever I doubted that leaving UK to live in Oz was a good idea then the movie I saw today would remind me. 'This is England' is set in 1983, Mrs Thatcher's Britain: the Falklands war, high unemployment, skinheads, racism. Good music though!
That was quite a contrast to the morning which I spent at the Perth Art Gallery visiting the Egyptian Exhibition on loan from the Louvre. It made me wonder what will be left to show of our civilization in the centuries to come. Plastic bags and toxic waste? Let's hope not.

I still have a sore arm and it looks like it's not going away any time soon so it's probably just as well that I'm beginning to enjoy the pain. I got it from excessive cutting and guillotining new sets of games for my students.
The doc can't give me anything to cure it and there's no point taking painkillers because then I'll just use it more and delay the healing still further. So I think of it as a reminder not to be so stupid again. Surely I should have learned by now that no good deed goes unpunished. Never volunteer.
The doctor said maybe ultrasound therapy might help if I can afford it, the chiropractor is willing to try magnetism and internet sources suggest acupuncture. Maybe I should go back to the witch doctor in Borneo who once cured my eczema.
So while I consider my options I'll enjoy the 'wriggly tooth' sensation of the pain in my arm and continue to be a pain in the neck to my colleagues who'll have to pick up the slack when the next set of games needs cutting.

Just back from the Doc's. Tennis elbow wasn't a bad guess after all. In fact, it's actually golfer's elbow. See below:
|
Tendonitis (irritation and inflammation of the tendon tissue) is the most common condition affecting the elbow. It is frequently referred to as "tennis elbow" when there is an injury to the outer tendon and "golfer's elbow" when there is an injury to the inner tendon. However, elbow tendonitis may be caused by a variety of sports or work-related activities that involve heavy use of the wrist and forearm muscles.
Other names for tennis elbow and golfer's elbow are lateral epicondylitis and medial epicondylitis, respectively.
Now, it must be obvious to all that I didn't get this playing golf. Maybe it was caused by a repeated scooping motion...Labels: Golfer's Elbow

"So you have a week off? How delightful? How would you like to spend it?"
"Well, I thought some heavy rain would be nice followed by a little drizzle and a cold wind. It would remind me of the British summers of my childhood. Perhaps I could arrange for some heavy machinery outside the front door to ensure I don't get lazy and lie-in too long and then get my husband's pal to phone at 6.30 a.m. to wake me at the weekend so that it won't be too tough to get back into the routine when work comes round again next week. Oh, and I definitely want to spend a couple of hours flicking through back editions of the Reader's Digest so I'd better make sure I have to go to the doctor's with something inconvenient like a swollen elbow. Right hand, of course, to stop me typing and wasting all my time on the computer. Tennis elbow might be good, vengeance from the sports gods because I failed to watch Wimbledon again this year. "
