If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy. It it were merely challenging, that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day. -E.B. White, writer (1899-1985)

Surely that is the dieter's problem. She (or even he) starts each day in conflict: diet and improve yourself or eat and enjoy yourself. So far hedonism is winning out over self-improvement. I have (another) good excuse for not weighing myself today. My scales are at the uni having been borrowed by a group of teachers returning to Hong Kong. No, it's not that they are all chronically overweight or that there is a major shortage of scales on the island, more that they were worried about having to pay excess on their baggage. They used my scales to weigh their bags before they got on the bus to take them to the airport on Saturday. Do you think I should have mentioned that they weigh 4 kilos light?
