How did I spend the last day of 2004? I spent it repaying an old debt. I owed a friend a waffle and ice-cream. This debt has been outstanding for two years now and, as you can imagine, it was preying on my mind but as the friend concerned lives in the back of beyond in an area devoid of waffle shops I had been unable to pay off the debt until yesterday. As we sat in the sunshine together with a waffle and two scoops each (chocolate overload and coffee ice, thank you for asking) she said,
“I always remember something you once said to me.”
“Er, STRESSED is DESSERTS spelled backwards?”
“No”
“Ah, Life is uncertain, eat dessert first?”
“No, you said that I should always NOTICE when I’m enjoying myself. So, I just wanted to point out that I’m definitely enjoying this waffle.”

2004 finished with tragedy for millions of people. The recent tsunami has made all of us count our blessings so as I begin 2005 I think I’ll make a point of following my own forgotten advice and always try to notice when I’m enjoying myself.
